Strictly Come Dancing Week Eight: Bye Bye Blackpool, Bye Bye Jamelia

23rd November 2015

Strictly Come Dancing Week Eight: Bye Bye Blackpool, Bye Bye Jamelia
It was the end of the road for Jamelia this weekend, as the singer became the ninth contestant to head out of this years Strictly Come Dancing.

The brummie singer found herself in the dance-off for a FIFTH time in the series and unfortunately this week could not dance her way out of it.

Her and partner Tristan McManus were up against fellow singer Peter Andre and his partner Janette Manrara. The Australian was bottom of the leaderboard after night one after scoring only 28 points for his jive. Jamelia on the other hand recorded her best dance of the series, scoring 31 points for her Quickstep.

The result of the judges votes was heavily criticised on social media. For the first time this series, the vote was not unanimous, with Len Goodman being the only judge to save Jamelia. However it was little too late. Despite what appeared to many as a weaker performance in the dance-off, it was still Peter Andre who was saved.

The result will do nothing to drown out Ola Jordan's recent claims that the judges scores are fixed. The Polish dancer announced it as part of her reason for why she is leaving Strictly at the end of the series.

Around The Dancefloor

Elsewhere on the dancefloor it was a high scoring week, with every couple - except Peter Andre and Janette Manrara - scoring over 30 points!

For the second week in a row, it was Coronation Street Actress Georgia May Foote and her Italian partner Giovani Pernice who topped the leaderboard with a score of 38 points. The pair's stunning American Smooth was praised highly by the judges, with Bruno claiming he had been “blown away" by the performance. Georgia has come a long way in the competition given her lack of prior dance experience and she's now the favourite to win with some bookmakers.

Just behind them in the leaderboard were Anita Rani and her partner Gleb. They recorded their first 10 and highest score of the series following an impressive and dramatic Paso Doble. There had been criticism recently that Anita was being underscored by the judges, however that was not the case this week as she was awarded 37 points, leaving her in second place. Even Craig Revell Horwood couldn't find criticism, describing it as “magnificent".

Also scoring 37 were Kevin Clifton and Kellie Bright. The pair have bounced back strongly since finding themselves in the bottom two a couple weeks ago. Their quickstep routine was a hit with Bruno who described it as “another outstanding performance in a night of dancing delight".

Also wowing the crowd were Jay and Aliona. The Wanted singer was an early favourite in the competition after a stunning jive in Week Three, however since then he hasn't topped the leaderboard. That wait continues, but he certainly delivered an improved performance. “I've been waiting since week three to see something as good as that and you've just shown it to me!" was Len's verdict on the pair's salsa.

Following behind them were Katie Derham and Anton Du Beke with 35 points. Their American Smooth earnt them their highest score in the competition and Anton's highest EVER on Strictly. Despite a couple disappointing weeks mid-series, Katie has really upped her game in the last couple of performances. “that was a fitting dance for this wonderful ballroom, elegant, sophisticated and full of glamour. You're best performance!"

Helen George and her partner Aljaz were awarded 34 points for their Charleston. The Charleston has scored consistently well all series and this week was no exception. Helen continues to be in the mix going into the final stages of the competition and is one of four remaining celebrities who are yet to feature in the bottom two. However despite this good score, Helen was tearful backstage after the performance, after a mistake saw her trip up a set of steps, and her confidence will need some boosting ahead of next week.
